Two old school mates reunite for a surfing holiday in an idyllic part of Northern NSW. As the two men, Richard and Bernie, begin to re-establish their friendship, an unexpected incident occurs, throwing their plans into complete chaos.
As a result, the main character, Richard, finds himself reflecting on significant aspects of his life’s journey. These collage-like impressions, interspersed with comic interludes, enable Richard to confront his personal demons, and make sense of the malevolent universe he grew up in.
Part memoir, part fiction Journey to Minnie is a story of the search for connection and meaning in a chaotic world.
“Journey to Minnie” is a journey into the deepest heart of its author “Richard” through his friend “Bernie’s” unexpected fall into the abyss of unconsciousness in a hospital bed. Faced with the seemingly impenetrable depths of Bernie’s world, Richard shares life stories with Bernie - the friend who cannot reply, but Richard hopes with all his heart, can hear him.
The warmth and humour of an old friend’s voice, Richard hopes, will keep both men close and connected through its matter-of-fact openness and boyish quirky humour that had been the cornerstone of their friendship.
The two men eventually do reach Minnie, but not in the way they had planned. Humour and honesty slice through the stories told at Bernie’s bedside.
This is the story of a friendship in which time was of the essence and the sharing of his soul, in spite of the conditions, brought Richard closer to finding his own peace when it seemed inevitable that every moment mattered, but every moment could rob them both of each other.
More than an autobiography, this is a story of friendship, of courage and of an enduring bond of loyalty in a setting in which the human heart can be seen at its best but also at its most fragile.
