What is art therapy?

Art therapy is an allied health profession. Art therapy combines aspects of counselling and the creative arts to support a person’s emotional, cognitive, physical and spiritual wellbeing.

What happens in an art therapy session?

In an art therapy session, we collaborate to find a focus for your session. Some of the things we might explore include:

  • Dealing with challenging emotions and experiences, exploring identity and life purpose.

  • Managing and processing stressful life events.

  • Identifying patterns in our thinking and behaviour.

  • Giving voice to different parts of the self and exploring their needs and desires.

  • Exploring self-compassion, mindfulness and other self-care practices.

  • I will guide you to use creative arts modalities to express, explore and feel.

No previous art experience or skill is needed.
Options for creative expression include:

Drawing, painting, clay, sound, movement, music, writing, poetry and spoken word, sculpture, collage, printmaking, photography/video, collecting & gathering organic materials, puppetry and more.

Together we will explore and make meaning of what you create in the session.
